These will contribute to the introduction of Internet of Things (IoT) for production equipment by integrating real-time control and information processing
Mitsubishi Electric Corporation launches three new MELIPC series industrial computer models for factory automation (FA) control applications and edge computing. The flagship MI5000 combines real-time control and information processing in a single box, the mid-range MI2000 is designed for extensive system expansion, and the compact, low-cost MI1000 enables companies to introduce IoT to their factory floors.
Main function
1) MI5000 for edge computing, integrating real-time control and information processing
- Rapidly collect, diagnose, and provide feedback on production data using a single machine equipped with VxWorks®1 and Windows® operating system. Saves space and reduces the cost of building IoT systems.
- CC-Link IE Field Network compatibility enables high-speed data exchange at speeds of up to 1 ms for ultra-precise real-time control.
- Quality equivalent to Mitsubishi Electric MELSEC series universal programmable controllers is guaranteed. Compliance with IEC2/JIS standards ensures robustness and resilience required for use in production sites.
1 Real-time operating system for embedded systems, developed and marketed by Wind River Systems, Inc.
2 International organization that sets standards for electrical, electronic and related technologies
2) MI2000 for extensive system extensions to optimize IoT use on production floors
- Contributes to improved product quality by performing data diagnostics and monitoring of operations at production sites using a built-in powerful processor and Windows® operating system.
- Expands systems with PCI and PCI Express3 expansion ports. Performs high-speed production data collection using CC-Link IE Field Network cards (optional) and advanced control via input/output cards (optional).
3 Interface to connect computers and peripherals for system expansion
3) MI1000 for low-cost introduction of IoT on existing production facilities to improve innovation
- Compact chassis with Windows® pre-installed for highly flexible production floor installations.
- When installed as a gateway in existing facilities that do not have communication functions, data exchanges with host systems can be performed for the cost-effective introduction of IoT.

Background
The increasing use of information technology (IT) in manufacturing sites is generating increased demand for FA systems that further integrate the information processing capabilities of computers and equipment with data input and output for real-time processing and feedback of control signals. In addition, edge computing is attracting attention as a means to improve productivity and quality.
Mitsubishi Electric’s three MELIPC series industrial computer models for edge computing are equipped with VxWorks® for real-time control and the integration of control and data processing in one machine, as well as various universal applications in Windows®. All models come with basic software for Edgecross4, an open platform provided by the Edgecross Consortium and data collector5 manufactured by Mitsubishi Electric. The computers can exchange data with a wide range of FA devices and use Edgecross applications for the easy construction of edge computing systems. In the future, Mitsubishi Electric will continue to work on reducing the total cost of ownership in the manufacturing industry by promoting eF@ctory6 solutions with Edgecross.
